JIMMIE ALLEN & ABBY ANDERSON
SHALLOW
Stoney Creek Records
These two US country stars have taken on one of the biggest and most impressive hits of this year in the form of the A Star Is Born breakout track from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. The results are phenomenal and Allen and Anderson sound like they were born to sing together. Their voices just melt into each other’s and they deliver a poignant and original cover version, with a tonne of heart and outstanding vocals. LK
ROD MELANCON
CORPUS CHRISTI CARWASH
Blue Elan Records
Melancon pays tribute to the late Freddy Fender on this bluesy country shuffle. With an organ adding a little soul he brings Fender’s back to voice to life as he laments, ‘”The Great Freddy Fingers,” they don’t call me that no more,’ poignant stuff. DH
SUMMER HEART
BUCKLE UP
Kitsune
With an aesthetically pleasing funky opening beat overlayed with slow jam lyrics that builds to a crashing, earworm chorus this latest offering from Summer Heart really puts the rising star on the map. It has that authentic vibe that is somewhat lacking from the current mainstream charts and it’s laid back production means it has that chilled out vibe making it perfect listening for a lazy Sunday. LK
PASTIS
AROUND HERE
Stupido Records
Indie rock needn’t be a thing of the past, especially when bands like Finland’s Pastis are making hook-laden anthems like this. Of course, there are recognisable reference points such as The Rifles and Caesars, but there’s also enough freshness and ardour on display to keep things interesting. DH
TRUNKY JUNO
SMALL TOWN
Silent Kid Records
This track is an eclectic, lo-fi pop delight. It has a real old-school pop vibe that is somewhat missing from today’s chart and DIY quality’s of the production means it has that bedroom texture vibe which result is a slightly off-kilter style that still manages to be current. It’s easy listening and makes for a joyful playlist addition. LK
DANIEL NORGREN
THE FLOW
Superpuma Records
Recorded in a single room of a 19th-century textile farmhouse and inspired by the landscapes and soundscapes of Sweden, this spacious track stretches out over its lengthy running time and provides the listener with almost seven-minutes of serenity, perfectly encapsulating its surrounding. DH
