The Arliston competition prize: heavyweight 12″ vinyl, exclusive notebook and a T-shirt
Win a vinyl package for Arliston’s debut ‘Disappointment Machine’ – a hauntingly beautiful journey through love, loss, and letting go
London-based duo Arliston, made up of vocalist/instrumentalist Jack Ratcliffe and instrumentalist/producer George Hasbury, are releasing their debut album on 7 February. The music they make together is richly layered and deeply introspective, bringing together ambient textures, delicate piano melodies, and swelling synths with Ratcliffe’s brooding baritone. Their sound sits somewhere between the melancholic depth of The National, the atmospheric beauty of Bon Iver, and the stark honesty of Damien Rice – intimate yet expansive, intricate yet deeply human.
At its core, Disappointment Machine is an album about the lingering weight of unrequited love and the bittersweet process of letting go. Written in just two weeks, it captures the emotional turbulence of heartbreak, regret, and self-reflection. Scratches is a fragile, piano-led track that hones in on the quiet aftermath of an argument—one person waiting, knife idly scratching at the table, hoping the other will return, but they never do. Time Lost dives into the ache of knowing certain moments can never be relived, its sparse arrangement mirroring the stillness of reflection. The album’s closer, Stay In Brixton, offers a rare glimpse of optimism, as soft keys and swelling violins carry the realisation that painful memories can eventually be replaced with new, better ones.
