2017 Mercury Prize: which of this year’s LPs will be crowned ‘Album Of The Year’?

The dozen albums in the running for this year’s accolade are announced ahead of the winner being awarded in September

Today saw the announcement of the 2017 Mercury Prize ‘Albums of the Year’ shortlist. The annual celebration is held to promote the best of UK music, recognising artistic achievement across a range of contemporary music genres. The 12 LPs were chosen by an independent judging panel and revealed at a launch event, hosted by BBC Music’s Huw Stephens.

“This year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize shortlist celebrates the remarkable power of British music,” stated the judging panel. “What these artists have in common is an infectious pleasure in music making and an arresting sense of urgency about the music they make. They delight in exploring musical possibilities and refusing to be pinned down by genre conventions.”

The 12 shortlisted albums are…

  • Relaxer – alt-j
  • Blossoms – Blossoms
  • Together, As One – Dinosaur
  • ÷ – Ed Sheeran
  • How to Be a Human Being – Glass Animals
  • Common Sense – J Hus
  • Let Them Eat Chaos – Kate Tempest
  • Yesterday’s Gone – Loyle Carner
  • Process – Sampha
  • Gang Signs & Prayer – Stormzy
  • Love in the 4th Dimension – The Big Moon
  • I See You – The xx

The 2017 Awards Show will take place on Thursday 14 September at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, London and tickets are on sale now. The event will feature live performances from many of the shortlisted artists and the evening will culminate in the announcement of the overall winner of ‘Album of the Year’.

Live coverage will be broadcast on television and radio via BBC Four and BBC Radio 6 Music. The BBC Four show will feature performances from the artists on the night, building up to moment the winner is announced. Ahead of this, BBC Two will air a 30-minute documentary previewing the shortlisted artists for the 2017 Prize. BBC Radio 6 Music will also be broadcasting live on the night and interviewing the winner.
