The Canadian songwriter-producer and the all-conquering British female singer both took home a haul of this year’s Billboard Music Awards

Last night saw the 2016 Billboard Music Awards take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, hosted by Ludacris and Ciara. The Weeknd was the biggest winner of the night, taking home eight awards including Top R&B Song and Top Hot 100 Artist, but Adele wasn’t far behind, scooping up five BBMAs including Top Artist and Top Female Artist.

Elsewhere, See You Again by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth was Billboard’s Top Hot 100 Song, Fetty Wap was chosen as the Best New Artist, Justin Bieber was crowned Top Male Artist and Top Social Media Artist and One Direction won Top Duo/Group. Rihanna took home the fan-voted Billboard Chart Achievement Award, while Celine Dion graciously accepted the annual Icon Award.

The Vegas audience were also treated to an A-list roster of female-fuelled, poptastic performances from the likes of Ariana Grande, Meghan Trainor and Britney Spears, culminating in Madonna paying homage to Prince with a rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U and then joined by Stevie Wonder for a duet of Purple Rain.
