Among 2020’s 100 Alternative Power Music List, multi-award-winning jazz artist, journalist and founder of the Women in Jazz Media organisation

Proving to be a versatile and formidable musician and songwriter, Fiona Ross oozes class. Listening to her most-recent album, Thoughts, Conversations And To Do Lists, is like watching an encyclopedia of jazz burst from the pages. Whether Latin-tinged shuffles or show tunes befitting of Broadway, Ross glides through styles without ever looking out of place. It’s not just about the music, pay close attention to a song like The Don’t Stop Just Breathe Ragtime and you’ll gain a peek into the life of a hard-working artist who is out there making it happen.

STYLE: Little bit of everything! You will find some jazz, some soul, some Latin, singer-songwriter… “Her style is poetic and the messages ooze with Millennial angst” (Jazz Weekly).

STRENGTHS: Well, I am classically trained pianist so a piano based songwriter and I have been surrounded by an incredible diverse range of music all my life which embeds itself in my music. I think that is probably the key to my ‘sound’. I just write whatever is in my head at the time, so could be anything! I am always honest and true to who I am, so never try to be something I am not. I am always growing as a writer.

ACHIEVEMENTS: I have released seven albums of my own material, totalling 79 songs. I have been very grateful to have received numerous awards, including Best Jazz Song from the World Songwriting Awards for For My Dad, Outstanding achievement awarded by the Global Music Awards and International female songwriter of the year as well as having my song Mistress which was recorded live in a stairwell, selected to be included in the British Library archives for prosperity, which was a huge honour.

FAVOURITE SONGWRITER: So many and I can’t pick one, but Rickie Lee Jones and Billy Joel have been part of my life from a very young age.

AMBITIONS: Just trying to be the best I can be. I have currently released 79 songs, so hoping to make it to 100 in the next year!
