The Week In Review (19-25 Sep)
We round-up the last week in music, including news you might’ve missed, our #SongOfTheDay playlist and Classic Of The Week
We’re glad to be back folks, though, not as delighted as you must be for Team Songwriting’s return – seriously, what have you been doing with yourselves these last few days while you waited for this week’s round-up? Frankly we don’t want to know. What we do know, though, is that you’re dying to hear what’s been going on since we last spoke, well…
We’ve been shocked by the revelation that 1/5 of us Brits are afraid of clowns, guffawed at an Australian police force’s Facebook appeal to find a ‘missing’ girl who was sat in her bedroom and considered moving to Finland so that we can take up augmented climbing. But before you book your flights to Finland, here’s the rest of the week in review.
Classic Of The Week
‘The Message’ by Nas (1996)
Having announced himself as one of hip-hop’s most gifted wordsmiths on his stunning 1994 debut album Illmatic, the Harvard University honoured Nas took his success to another level two years later with his sophomore LP It Was Written. Brutally tight, laced with bite and crammed full of insight, today’s track is a gem from a true legend
News this week
- Every album by Beck (bar his most recent, Morning Phase) is getting reissued on vinyl. Odelay, Sea Change and Guero will be out on 28 October; a release date for his remaining five albums is still to be announced.
- Speaking of reissues, the first eight Kinks albums, originally released between 1964 and 1969, plus bonus compilation The Kinks from 1970, are getting reissued as a 10-disc mono vinyl boxset, complete with a 48-page hardback book. The Mono Collection is out on 18 November.
- And once more with feeling… Tori Amos’s third album Boys For Pele is getting the deluxe reissue treatment to mark its 20th anniversary, also on 18 November. The two-CD set will include B-sides, rare recordings and four previously unreleased songs.
