It feels like the time is right for the British folk scene to find a new torchbearer, someone who can reinvigorate the genre and attract a new generation of fans. Based on this track, which brings elements of The Beta Band and early Pink Floyd, McArthur might be the person for the job. DH

This bluegrass ditty has an old-school flavour to it which gives the impression that it belongs in a different time, that is until you learn it was inspired by a bartender Burton was eavesdropping on in a bar in Cody, Wyoming. Then it all falls into place, this is rural music for communities who still need representation in our cultural landscape. DH

Sweet, luscious guitars lead this stripped back acoustic ballad from Brown. He lets his rich vocals do the talking on this gentle country love song about being unable to dance when everyone is watching, but when he’s alone with his sweetheart he turns into John Travolta as the love and music take over. STRANGE THINGS HAPPENING

Taken from the East London band’s debut album, this track charms with it’s George Harrison-style slide guitar and rousing vocals from frontman Andrew White. Some well-placed backing vocals and mandolin only add to the feeling that these guys know their way around a song. DH

LONELY IF YOU ARE
Broken Bow Records
This anthemic track from the Nashville-based artist has a funky beat, catchy lyrics and a modern country vibe that makes it ideal for radio. This is one for those long nights and even longer drives. LK
