Christie Belanger: the same good tempered and aching approach to melody that is found in Belle and Sebastian’s songwriting

It’s Thursday which can mean only one thing, an exclusive track brought to you by your very own Songwriting Magazine

his Thursday’s exclusive is from a New York indie-folk songwriter who’s been writing since she was 13 and that was featured among The Deli Magazine’s “Best of NYC 2015”. Having released her debut album Bare in 2010 – followed by the 2013 EP After – Christie Belanger returns with the delicate Sideways.

Taken from her forthcoming EP, For Whomever, From No One, Sideways adopts the same good tempered and aching approach to melody that is found in Belle and Sebastian’s songwriting. And though it comes with a touch of country esque sadness laced over the top of the track, Sideways sees Belanger happy in her own skin and more hopeful than the track’s mood betrays.

As she says, “So much of my life has depended on the relationships I’ve created with the people around me. I write songs in the hopes that those who listen can reflect on relationships of their own, past or present, and that doing so will enable them to grow, to heal, and continue to love Sideways is a tale about acceptance and forward motion. It’s about thriving on solitude and learning to love every moment of it.”

Christie Belanger has been recommended for fans of Bob Dylan, Laura Marling or Regina Spektor and we feel that fans of the later will find much to enjoy in her music. As always, though, we’ll leave the decision on who she sounds like up to you…
