Frontman of the East Kilbride indie-rock band died this morning following a tragic accident the day before his 22nd birthday
Tribute has been paid today to Gary Watson, the frontman of highly regarded Scottish indie-rock band The Lapelles, after it was revealed that the talented musician had lost his life this morning. Watson would have been 22 today (14 August).
Watson died following injuries suffered in a tragic accident last night, with The Scottish Sun reporting that the injuries were caused by the young singer and guitarist falling into the River Clyde.
A moving tribute to Watson was posted by The Lapelles on their Facebook page, with the band writing:
“It’s with shock, heavy hearts and sadness that we have to let you know the news that Gary sadly passed away this morning as a result of injuries sustained in a tragic accident last night.
Today was his 22nd birthday. We are lost for words and struggling to process such a tragedy. Gary was a creative force, a man who without his vision this band wouldn’t exist. We have lost a friend, a brother, a hero. At the moment it doesn’t seem real. We send our deepest condolences to Gary’s family and would appreciate your respect in allowing them & us some peace whilst we grieve.
Forever in our hearts, with peace you go. X”
Tribute was also paid by Scottish Sun music writer Jim Gellatly and Franz Ferdinand.
Gellatly said: “This is such a tragic loss. The Lapelles are rising stars on the verge of something very big. They toured with The Last Shadow Puppets recently, have been playing at every festival going and are top of my bands to look out for. Gary was such a lovely guy, he would always come up and speak to you.He was totally genuine and passionate about his music. I had no doubt that he and the band were going to be massive. My thoughts are with his family, friends and band mates.”
Franz Ferdinand posted this message on their Twitter account this afternoon: “We’re so sad to hear of the tragic passing of The Lapelles Gary Watson, a lovely, talented man. Thoughts are with his family, friends & band.”
The Lapelles formed on 8 February 2014 and are comprised of Gary Watson (Guitar/Vocals), Jack Anderson (Bass/Vocals), Leon Green (Lead Guitar), Christopher Ballantyne (Synthesizer) and Jamie Holmes (Drums). They have released a series of well received songs, including Grab Life By, Snakehips and Seventeen and were recently called Scotland’s “hottest band right now” by The Scottish Sun.
