We round-up the last week in music, including news you might’ve missed, our #SongOfTheDay playlist and Classic Of The Week
Happy New Year folks and we mean that, truly. After the patchwork quilt of decay that was 2016, we’ve spent the time between now and when we last spoke hoping that 2017 will be a vintage year.
And do you know what? We really think this is gonna be a year to remember for all the right reasons. Heck, we may have broken a new years resolution or two already – we’re hanging on to the belief that smoking more means less – but there is so much in the world of music to look forward too, including our first Week In Review of 2017. Enjoy.
Classic Of The Week
‘I’m A Believer’ by The Monkees (1966)
Yes The Monkees were a made for TV band. And yes this song, their biggest hit, wasn’t written by any of the group’s members – with the evergreen Neil Diamond the songwriting genius behind this ditty. However, none of these things matter because I’m A Believer is one of the most buoyant songs ever written and we bet that it’s just put a smile on each and every one of your faces.
News this week
- The xx have announced a North American tour, with 24 shows in the US and Canada in April and May to promote their new third album I See You. Singer Romy Madley has also just got engaged to her girlfriend, designer and artist Hannah Marshall.
- Billy Joel will play his first LA gig in three years at Dodger Stadium on 13 May. It will be his only live show in southern California this year.
- Also hitting the road are U2, who’ve announced that they’ll be playing The Joshua Tree in full at a series of live shows to mark its 30th anniversary – though dates and locations are still TBC.
- Bon Iver, on the other hand, have cancelled upcoming UK dates in Blackpool, Edinburgh and London. The mini-tour was supposed to happen in February but Justin Vernon and co say they’ve had to pull out for “personal reasons”.
- And finally… Rick Astley is launching his own beer. The 80s pop legend whose career was revitalised by the ‘Rickrolling’ craze on the web has been working with Copenhagen’s Mikkeller Brewery, and is said to have opted for a ‘Pilsner-type lager’.
