Aloe Blacc: doing it for the kids

Jennifer Hudson, Aloe Blacc and DJ Jazzy Jeff will all be participating in a free show in Brooklyn on Wednesday

Next Wednesday – 7 October – Cadman’s Plaza in Brooklyn, NYC will host a rally called Stand For School Equality, which organisers Families For Excellent Schools say they expect to attract over 15,000 people. The rally is calling for change to, in their words, “an unbalanced education system currently failing hundreds of thousands of children in New York City.”

None of this has much to do with actually writing songs, admittedly. But we thought you might like to know because if you’re in the area, it’s your chance to catch some big names from the world of music in action for free! Headlining the event will be Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning actress and former American Idol contestant who also just happens to have a Grammy and three US Top 10 albums under her belt (two of which also reached the Top 30 this side of the pond). She’ll be joined by DJ Jazzy Jeff, the renowned beat-creator and turntablemeister (and of course, Fresh Prince collaborator!) who most recently worked on the Straight Outta Compton soundtrack, and by modern-day R&B crooner Aloe Blacc, of I Need A Dollar fame.

In a statement to the press, Ms Hudson said: “I’m standing for education equality because every child deserves access to a great school,” which sounds fair enough to us! For more information on the rally and on the wider campaign, visit www.familiesforexcellentschools.org
