Fans of Childish Gambino will be disappointed to hear that Donald Glover is to retire his rap and soul alter-ego. However, it’s not all bad news, because they will at least receive a final LP from him.

The actor made his announcement to shocked fans during last weekend’s Governors Ball in New York. At the end of his performance, he said: “I’ll see you for the last Gambino album.” But the multi-talented performer left it a few days before clarifying his decision.

The actor, singer and songwriter is worried that continuing might compromise his punk-ness. He explained: “Like I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk.”

Continuing: “Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at Atlanta as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore.

Adding: “As much as Redbone is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”

Glover’s schedule over the next 24 months is perhaps a hint as to why Gambino is taking a back seat. With the new Spider-Man film in post-production there will be a colossal press campaign in the build-up to its release. Glover is also currently filming the yet untitled Han Solo movie, and lending his voice to the role of Simba in the Lion King movie.

However, his onstage announcement promised fans a fourth album before he hangs up his mic. To date, Childish Gambino has released three albums. His debut Camp was released in 2011. This was followed by Because The Internet (2013) and 2016’s Awaken, My Love!
