With frontman Stuart Murdoch’s voice in “bad shape”, the band have been forced to pull the plug on their tour

European Belle and Sebastian fans look away, because this will be news you’ll ill wish to read, after the band confirmed that they are to cancel their scheduled tour of Europe due to health reasons.

The news was announced on their official website, with a statement advising: “Belle and Sebastian regret to announce the cancellation of their upcoming tour of mainland Europe. This is due to lead singer Stuart Murdoch’s current health. It is a huge disappointment for us not to make the concerts, and the decision was not taken easily. Stuart wants nothing else but to be able to play and sing for you, but has to get better first. We hope you understand.”

Earlier this month Murdoch had tweeted his health concerns, explaining: “You know, I don’t have a great voice, but I am acutely aware when it’s in bad shape, like it was tonight in Dunfermline.”

He added: “I have a heavy cold, but too late to cancel the gig. The crowd and the band got me through the gig.”

Earlier this year Stuart Murdoch spoke to our friends at Sodajerker and ran them through how some of Belle and Sebastian’s classic tracks were written, including the brilliant I’m A Cuckoo. You can see the video for I’m A Cuckoo below.
