Cold is self-consciously small-scale: it sounds like a lover recreating a sensual R&B track to their audience of one, and is all the more charming for it. The brass line that serves as the post-hook is wonderfully silly, and underneath all this is a mastery of songcraft that wins the listener over. BD

Sweet sweeping vocals and poignant lyrics from this exciting country artist make this a real standout. It’s a stripped-back, thought-provoking guitar-led ballad that shines a light on the pitfalls artists come across on the road to success. A short sharp burst of crunk revival, this flip of Petey Pablo’s Freek-A-Leek bangs just as hard as the original did 16 years ago. And Saweetie’s call-and-response hook sets the track off perfectly, ice-cold sex rap in the tradition of Trina or Lil Kim with a Bay Area twist. BD

A careening fiddle guides this rocking country number. With Jewell arguing the toss between embracing the future and longing for the past, it’s only fitting that she’s accompanied by a track which feels like it could veer off a cliff at any moment – rather that than be stuck in the middle of an identity crisis. It’s just been Pride Month and this country-pop single is an LGBTQ anthem celebrating all of our differences. It has a soulful feel and a laid back production making it a real standout from an artist well and truly on the rise. It has the real potential to be a big hit. LK
