EXCLUSIVE! ‘Devil Of Ramadi’ by Gideon’s Army

This week’s first track exclusive is a slice of languid, anthemic Southern rock from New York-based musical collective Gideon’s Army

Our first exclusive this week – coming at you a day later than normal due to the May Bank Holiday weekend – is Devil Of Ramadi by Gideon’s Army. The track is taken from their debut album King Of The League, which will be out on 27 May.

Based in New York, Gideon’s Army – not to be confused with the 70s/80s Christian rock band of the same name – aren’t a ‘band’ in the traditional sense, but a loose musical collective that’s sprung up around singer, guitarist and self-styled “rock n’ roll hillbilly” Rob Bray. Early Gideon’s Army releases were Bray solo projects, but as time’s gone on he’s built up a team of like-minded musical souls. Collectively, they cite the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Black Crowes and Kings of Leon as influences.

Of Devil Of Ramadi itself, Bray tells us: “I started writing this song as soon as I walked out of the Clint Eastwood-directed film American Sniper. I had read the book of the same title as well. I was moved beyond belief by Chris Kyles’ story, his courage, his struggles, his generosity. His story of course ends in tragedy but for everyone who was touched by his convictions and hardships, his memory is still very much alive and vital.”
