Today’s week in review marks a departure from our previous round-ups, it’s our tribute to the sadly departed George Michael
Folks we wish that all that had been on our mind these past few days was the joy of Christmas, spending time with loved ones, gorging on food and drinking more than a little bit too much. Now don’t get us wrong, we’ve had all of those things and we’re grateful for the wonderful memories that they’ve left us with. However, since the late hours of Christmas day one event has dominated our thoughts: the tragic passing of the brilliant George Michael.
In a year sadly dominated by the death of some of music’s true greats, with David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen and this Christmas eve, Status Quo’s Rick Parfitt, representing just the tip of the iceberg, the loss of George Michael was a further reminder of the frailty of life and the need to celebrate and cherish the gifts that these brilliant songwriters give to us.
George Michael was a one-off, a singular songwriting talent who made the move seamlessly from youthful pop megastar as part of the much loved duo Wham!, to internationally acclaimed solo artist. As with all true stars, it wasn’t just his art that made him so special. What truly set him apart from his peers and added him to the pantheon of greats was his ability to connect with people personally.
Whether through his songs, lyrics, humanitarian and charitable work, political conscience, courageous and unflinching position as a figurehead for LGBT, or his wit and sense of humour, George Michael has left a lasting impact on the lives of millions of people and a legacy that will live on forever.
From everyone at Songwriting, our thoughts are with the friends, family and loved ones of the truly magnificent George Michael.
Classic Of The Week
‘I’m Your Man’ by Wham! (1985)
There were so many options for the one song to sum-up George Michael, but in the end our choice was simple. It might not have been the most successful song released by George Michael – this despite making it to No 1 in the UK charts and reaching Gold status in the process – but it’s message is clear: George Michael, he’s our man
