Jennifer Saran is raising money to spread the philosophy of Ubuntu

Singer-songwriter Jennifer Saran teams up with some of the world’s most acclaimed musicians to raise funds for a global foundation

Alt-pop artist Jennifer Saran has collaborated with producer Narada Michael Walden to record the single Wake Up. The song is a heartfelt appeal to the world to address inequality. Featuring Grammy Award-winning male choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo and guitarist Carlos Santana, the song has been recorded to raise money for the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.

Originally established in Cape Town, the charity has since spread across the world with organisations in the USA and UK. It was set up in the name of Nobel Peace Prize-winner Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, with the aim of promoting world peace and the philosophy of Ubuntu.

Meaning “human-ness,” the philosophy comes from the southern African region and dates back to the 19th century, but was popularised in the 1950’s, becoming more widely adopted in the decades that followed.

The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation coordinates programmes such as Youth@Work and Giving Children A Chance At Life, which provides a curriculum of varying skill sets and raises money for HIV and TB treatments, respectively. While in the United States the foundation is working on ways to prevent teenage deaths due to violence.

Wake Up is available now on iTunes, with all proceeds going directly to the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.
