Jack Garratt: “Winning the BBC Music Sound of 2016 poll has left me feeling pretty stunned”

The Little Chalfont artist-producer has been named the winner of the BBC Music Sound Of 2016 ones to watch list

Artist-producer and multi-instrumentalist Jack Garratt has been named the winner of the BBC Music Sound Of 2016 list of the ones to watch this coming year. Garratt topped the shortlist of five acts, ahead of Canadian singer/songwriter Alessia Cara, and followed in third place by singer, songwriter and producer NAO. Blossoms, a five-piece band from Stockport, were fourth on the list, with electronic music producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mura Masa and the musical collective WSTRN tied in fifth position.

A native of Little Chalfont in Buckinghamshire and now resident of London, Jack Garratt had already won the BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year Award in December at the BBC Music Awards. He sold out a UK tour last year, supported Mumford & Sons on their UK tour dates and has also been cutting his teeth at festivals, including last year’s Radio 1 Future Festival. His hotly anticipated debut album, Phase, is due to be released this February.

“Winning the BBC Music Sound of 2016 poll has left me feeling pretty stunned at the end of one of the most emotionally and physically intense years of my life,” commented Garratt. “I cannot thank the BBC enough for their continued support, and everyone who voted for me. Every other name on the list is unbelievably talented, and I hope this year will be a great one for all of us.”

Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens says: “Jack Garratt is an incredibly exciting artist. He’s influenced by and understands a lot of different genres, from blues to electronica, and through his song-writing and live performances has become something of a phenomenon both live and on record. He has a huge year ahead of him, his music is being heard around the world and he’ll release his debut album. He’s a very worthy winner of the Sound of 2016!”

144 influential music industry experts including DJs, critics and bloggers voted in this year’s list. Last year’s winner, British soulful synth-pop trio Years & Years, were joined in the Sound Of 2015 by James Bay, Stormzy, Raury and George the Poet. Previous winners have included award-winning Adele and Sam Smith, LA pop band HAIM and Ellie Goulding.

A range of music, video, interviews and biographies from each of the acts, as well as details of the music experts and how the list was compiled, are available on the BBC Music Sound Of 2016 website: bbc.co.uk/soundof2016
