Today’s exclusive’s a Christmas song with a twist, as Janet Devlin tackles a subject matter divorced from mistletoe and wine

You may recognise Northern Irish singer-songwriter Janet Devlin as one of the contestants on Series 8 of The X Factor. While she may not have won the competition – being eliminated on the eighth show despite topping the public vote more times than any other act- she won the hearts of the audience and today she’ll win yours, with her alt-Christmas song.

Of Wake Up It’s Christmas, Devlin says: “Christmas isn’t all mulled wine and mistletoe! I wanted to explore the darker side of Christmas on this track. This is a song for anyone who’s ever been dumped at the holidays.”

She’s been likened to Ellie Goulding and Dolores O’Riordan. We also think that fans of Fiona Apple and Liz Phair will find much to enjoy in this supremely talented songwriter’s music. As always, though, we’ll leave the decision on that up to you…
