Alma: soulful pop from Los Angeles
Soulful pop vibes from sunny LA for this week’s Monday night exclusive, as we debut the new single by Alma
This week’s Monday track exclusive comes from LA-based singer-songwriter Alma. Medicine Man is taken from Alma’s forthcoming The Travel Size EP, which is due for release early in the New Year. If you’ve an ear for soulfully inclined grown-up pop, you’re going to like this one.
Originally from Wisconsin, Alma has been writing and recording her own music since her early teens, but began to take things more seriously in 2011 when she went to Columbia College in Chicago to study vocal performance. Her first EP Pass It On was released in 2012, followed by the single For A Poet in 2014 and then, later that same year, her debut album Tactics.
Of Medicine Man itself, Alma tells us: “Before penning any part of the song — lyrics, melody, or arrangement — I had this steady, unrelenting heartbeat sound in my head that quickly unfolded into a fully formed song. It was some of the fastest writing I’ve ever done, and the heartbeat was what grounded the process from start to finish, contributing to a cyclical (almost dizzying) feel that intensifies as it goes.”
The press release recommends this to fans of Ingrid Michaelson, Colbie Caillat or Corinne Bailey Rae, but as ever, you can make up your own mind…
