The annual songwriting awards are one of the most coveted and prestigious prizes in the British and Irish music industry

Jorja Smith is the only solo female artist to be in the running for an Ivor Novello Award. The nominations for this year’s event were made on 24 April, with Smith facing competition from Ghetts, The 1975, Jax Jones, George Ezra and Rudimental in the Best Contemporary Song category. Smith, Ghetts and The 1975 have been singled out for their hard-hitting lyrics that tackle racism, sexual abuse, drug addiction and Donald Trump. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Thursday 23 May.

Other nominees include Arctic Monkeys, Ben Howard and Hozier in the Best Song Musically And Lyrically category. The Ivor Novellos is made up of six categories including Best Album and Best Original Film Score. The annual awards have been celebrating the best of British and Irish songwriting for 64 years, with the first ceremony taking place in 1955.

“The works nominated for The Ivors 2019 are brilliantly diverse, and we’re delighted to see so many first-time nominees recognised,” says The Ivors Academy Chair, Crispin Hunt. “As the only peer-nominated music award in the country, they are a fantastic reflection of the exciting emerging talent of British and Irish music creators today. Our congratulations to all nominated.”
