Spotify: “Songwriters and producers are the backbone of the industry”

The digital music service launches awards show, playlists, podcasts and ‘Songshops’ to highlight the contribution songwriters make to the industry

Music, podcast and video streaming service, Spotify, acknowledges that songwriters are the guiding force behind the music industry and announces it will be launching ‘Secret Genius’ – a global initiative to highlight the contribution songwriters and producers make to the music industry and artists’ careers. Throughout the year, Secret Genius will launch an ambassador program, The Secret Genius Awards, podcasts, curated playlists and global songwriting workshops called Songshops.

“Songwriters and producers are the backbone of the industry and we want to help celebrate these incredibly talented people,” says Spotify’s Troy Carter. “The goal of Secret Genius is to give credit where credit is due by shining a light on these amazing creators.”

13 songwriters from around the world will host a Songshop where they invite their peers to collaborate to create a hit song. The songwriters participating this year are Alex Hope, Boi1da, Claudia Brant, Erika Ender, James Fauntleroy, J Kash, Justin Tranter, Lori McKenna, Tim McGraw, Noonie Bao, Ricky Reed, Savan Kotecha, Starrah and Wayne Hector.

One of these songwriters, Reed, commented: “The Spotify ambassadorship program has been amazing because it shines a spotlight on what we do behind the scenes, before songs make it to the platform and it allows me to partner with brilliant minds that are already close friends like on top of meeting new people and making new music that would otherwise not happen!”

The Secret Genius podcasts will offer in-depth and informed interviews from the world’s best songwriters, highlighting their creative process and their life in the industry.

Spotify will also be hosting the annual Secret Genius Awards later this year, honouring the best songwriters, producers and publishers. The annual award show will consist of nomination categories, presenters and performers.
