Nominations announced for The Ivors 2017

Coldplay, Michael Kiwanuka, Nick Cave and Skepta are among the songwriters in the running for this year’s Ivor Novello Awards

British Academy of Songwriters, Composers & Authors (BASCA), in association with PRS for Music, has revealed the nominations for the 62nd Ivor Novello Awards. The Ivors celebrate, honour and reward excellence in songwriting and composing, with six award categories for works released in the UK in 2016.

Created in 1956, the awards are named in honour of the distinguished British composer Ivor Novello, and represent the pinnacle of musical achievement and peer recognition in the music industry, with each judged category having a separate panel compiled entirely of specially invited songwriters and composers.

“BASCA’s nominations for the 62nd Ivor Novello Awards are as diverse and impressive as the contemporary UK music scene itself,” proclaimed BASCA Chair, Crispin Hunt. “As the only peer nominated music award ceremony in the country, we’re especially thrilled to be honouring such a cool selection of both emerging and established nominees; they are the true architects of the music we love, and reflect the creative global force that is British music writing. Our congratulations go out to everyone nominated today.”

This year’s nominations are as follows:

Best Song Musically and Lyrically
Recognising excellence in songwriting craft; with particular reference to melody, lyrics, harmony and structure.

• Black Man In A White World – Michael Kiwanuka – written by Dean ‘Inflo’ Josiah Cover and Michael Kiwanuka
• Overcome – Laura Mvula – written by Laura Mvula and Nile Rodgers
• Telomere – Mystery Jets – written by Blaine Harrison and Henry Harrison

Best Contemporary Song
This award recognises outstanding originality in songwriting; songs which capture the moment and/or explore the boundaries of contemporary music.

• Love$ick – Mura Masa – written by A$AP Rocky and Mura Masa
• Man – Skepta – written by Skepta and Josh Homme
• Sexual – NEIKED ft Dyo – written by Dyo, NEIKED and Elina Stridh

Album Award
Recognising exceptional songwriting and consistency across an album as a whole.

• Love & Hate – Michael Kiwanuka – written by Brian Burton, Dean ‘Inflo’ Josiah Cover and Michael Kiwanuka
• Skeleton Tree – Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – written by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis
• The Dreaming Room – Laura Mvula – written by Laura Mvula

Most Performed Work
Compiled by PRS for Music, this award credits the work having received the most broadcast, online and general performances in the UK during 2016.

• Adventure Of A Lifetime – Coldplay – written by Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Chris Martin
