David Bowie honoured, with Coldplay, Björk and James Bay among the winners, but Adele dominates by taking home four awards

Adele continued her incredible year by sweeping the board at the 36th BRIT Awards last night at The O2. The singer collected four awards in total: British Female Solo Artist, British Single, BRITs Global Success Award and the British Album of the Year – the most award wins for an individual act since Blur took four awards home in 1995.

Coldplay kicked off the show with a live performance of Hymn For The Weekend, and the band were back on stage later in the show to collect the award for British Group. This made Coldplay the most successful group in this category in BRIT history, having won in 2001, 2003 and 2012. Björk also became a four-time winner of the International Female Solo Artist award, who gave an acceptance speech via video message.

James Bay won the award for British Male Solo Artist, having been made the Critics’ Choice in 2015, and returned to play Hold Back The River as well as appearing with Justin Bieber to perform Love Yourself. Bieber also performed Sorry and came back to the stage to accept the International Male award – his first win in the category having won International Newcomer in 2011. There were other performances from Jess Glynne, The Weeknd, Little Mix and Rihanna, who was joined on stage by Drake to perform their current Billboard No 1 single Work.

Australian psych-rock act Tame Impala were the winners of International Group, and the Catfish And The Bottlemen won the award for British Breakthrough Act, which was determined by a social vote on Twitter combined with a public vote on BBC Radio 1 and the BRITs website. The award for British Artist Video of the Year, identified once again by a live Twitter vote during the show, went to One Direction for for Drag Me Down.

In a highly anticipated tribute, David Bowie was posthumously honoured with the BRITs Icon Award – one of only two recipients of this accolade, the other being Elton John in 2013 – presented by Annie Lennox to Gary Oldman, who gave a moving speech in tribute to his friend. The presentation was followed by a stirring performance from Bowie’s long-term touring band, with Lorde appearing as guest vocalist for Life On Mars.
