This week ‘Despacito’ proves a success for the track’s songwriters: Puerto Rican pop artist Luis Fonsi and rapper Daddy Yankee

As the first predominately Spanish song to top the charts since Macarena in 1996, Despacito is rewriting the standards. Owning the Billboard Top 100 as well as the Digital Song Sales chart and Streaming Songs chart, Despacito, translated to “slowly” in English, shows absolutely no sign of slowing down.

For Puerto Rican artists, Luis Fonsi and Ramón Ayala Luis Rodríguez, better known as Daddy Yankee, Despacito serves as their first Top 100 No 1 seat. For featured remix artist, Justin Bieber, it serves as his fifth. For Bieber, the song solidified him as the first ever artist to earn back-to-back new No 1 seats in consecutive weeks. Proceeding Despacito No 1 seat was DJ Khaled’s I’m The One, which featured Bieber as well.

Songwriters Ramón Ayala Luis Rodríguez and Erika Ender worked with Fonsi in order to create the swinging hit. Ender claims the original lyrics were born in Fonsi’s home in 2015. The addition of Daddy Yankee added a reggaeton-pop feel, ultimately solidifying the song for huge success on Latin and US charts.
