We round-up the last week in music, including news you might’ve missed, our #SongOfTheDay playlist and Classic Of The Week
What a wonderful contrast this past week has been to the previous. When we last spoke we were surrounded by empty chocolate wrappers, as over 2 billion people basked in the spirit of rebirth and resurrection.
Now, though, we are back with the news that the UK will steam into a general election on 8 June 2017. This comes amidst predictions of a landslide Conservative victory, raising the terrifying prospect of a decade of divisive right wing policies. From rebirth to death in the space of a week, it’s been a sobering seven days. Let’s just hope June really is the end of May.
But, to add a bit of cheer to that gloomy news, we’re back with our latest week in review. Enjoy.
Classic Of The Week
‘Susie (Now I’m Cryin’) by Free Cake For Every Creature (2016)
If Free Cake For Every Creature’s brilliant 2016 album, Talking Quietly Of Anything With You, has passed you by then you’re missing out on a true indie-pop gem. We could have picked any track from that superb LP, but Susie (Now I’m Cryin’) won out because it’s so sweet that it will melt even the coldest heart.
News this week
- Jack White and Elton John are among the artists featured in new BBC/PBS documentary series American Epic. The show sees them recreating some of the earliest US recording sessions, using carefully reassembled and restored original equipment.
- Speaking of vintage music, over 6,000 songs from Alan Lomax’s legendary archive of field recordings made all around the world can now be streamed at www.theglobaljukebox.org.
- Queen and Adam Lambert are touring the UK and Ireland later this year. The 12-date trek kicks off at the 3 Arena in Dublin on 25 November, and ends at London’s SSE Arena on 15 December.
- The line-up has been announced for Chicago festival Riot Fest on 15-17 September. Among the attractions are New Order, Queens Of The Stone Age, Buzzcocks, Dinosaur Jr, Bad Brains, Nine Inch Nails, Wu Tang Clan and Gogol Bordello.
- Roger Waters has announced details of his first solo album in 25 years. Out on 2 June, Is This The Life We Really Want? is the Pink Floyd man’s first solo opus since 1992’s Amused To Death.
