Jonny Debt: up there with the best of them

Unique, honest and with an oozing style, the Canadian songwriter Jonny Debt is a supremely talented instrumentalist and gifted lyricist

‘Strange Like Trees’ by Jonny DebtCanada has exported some of the world’s finest musicians to date, and if this single is anything to go by then gifted songwriter Jonny Debt is up there with the best of them.

Taking influence from the poetical lyrics of 1960’s psychedelia and mixing it with modern day visual imagery, Debt has produced an interesting and attractive record showcasing his innate talent.

Debt’s accomplished guitar playing – his five-finger style string picking, usually associated with the banjo, known as banjitar – gives the impression that he hails from the Deep South rather than Canada. However, this is not your usual country-bluegrass song. It provides a far more existential trip, offering the listener a sort of out-of-body experience.

Verdict: A bewitching and psychedelic experience
