Three Kings High

Bristolian live faves return with a third single that sees them continuing to blur the lines between several musical genres

Three Kings High Nothing Leftollowing the success of their Tell ‘Em Lies EP last summer, Bristol six-piece Three Kings High return with their third single, Nothing Left To Lose. And just like the last one, it’s a record that resolutely refuses to be put in any particular pigeonhole.

Joe ‘Chattabox’ Eden continues to sing the blues better than any rapper and rap better than any bluesman, as he laments: “Clean shirt on my back, boots on my feet, fridge full of beer/got everything a man could need my dear or so it would appear/but I ain’t got nothing, without you”. Accompanied by the group’s trademark multi-part harmonies, his voice rings out clear atop a backing that’s one-part Chili Peppers funk-rock to one-part retro soul-pop à la Aloe Blac or Cee-Lo Green.

Some killer axework from guitarist Samuel Otis only adds to what’s another truly unique-sounding offering from our local heroes. Shame there’s just the one track, though – will someone please hurry up and get them in the studio to record a full album?

Verdict: Another very strong release from one of Bristol’s best-kept musical secrets
