EXCLUSIVE! ‘Red Stilettos’ by The PrimaDonna Reeds

Tonight’s exclusive is from superb power-pop troupe The PrimaDonna Reeds

Our very first exclusive of 2017 comes courtesy of a US power-pop troupe with classical training and a rock attitude

Welcome back folks. We’ve not had the pleasure of bringing you an exclusive track since, well, last year. We knew that 2017s’ maiden offering would have to be special and if you’re a fan of effortlessly catchy power-pop, then today’s group shan’t disappoint.

The PrimaDonna Reeds are a New York group, whose roots run deep into the city’s Lower East Side. They were formed by flamenco/rock guitarist JC Ryder and vocalist Karena Reiter, with a little help coming from their musical friends.

Today’s exclusive, Red Stilettos, is included on the soundtrack of the recent Andy Garcia documentary on Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, Sad Vacation. The video was shot at The Stonewall Inn, which was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2016. Of Red Stilettos Ryder says:

“Red Stilettos is a collaboration between lead singer Karena Reiter (lyrics) and her husband, guitarist JC Ryder (music). Karena had just bought a hot pair of red stilettos and was prancing around their apartment in them. JC picked up his guitar and spontaneously composed the four chord verse riff and Karena came up with the lyric: “Running wild in red stilettos, lookin’ for my baby” on the spot, setting the theme for the song. Karena fleshed out the rest of the lyric about a quarrel between two lovers, and the girl frantically searching for and ultimately finding him and JC composed the middle section over the next few days. The song ends happily, when the protagonist ultimately finds her baby. Musically the song has a driving rhythm with a rocky, somewhat frantic quality that emotionally complements the story line.

“The script for the video was written by its director Robert Landergren, and tells a variation of the story, set primarily within a club–the legendary Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village New York. The drama between the lovers plays out during a performance of the song by the PrimaDonna Reeds, in which a demonic figure and his blonde bombshell accomplice try to separate the two lovers. The red stiletto clad protagonist, played by dark beauty, Mariana Cardenas, ultimately stalks out of the club, but her lover follows her, and they are re-united in the street, ending with a kiss.”

They’ve been likened to Joan Jett, Courtney Love and Cheap Trick. We couldn’t agree more with these comparisons, but also think that fans of The Smithereens and The New Pornographers will love Red Stilettos. But what do we know? Listen below and decide for yourselves…
