With ‘Ambitions’, Swedish quartet Chirping have recorded a single which demonstrates their potential to be the next big indie band
mbitions is the new single from Swedish four-piece Chirping. Hailing from the northern suburbs of Stockholm, and recorded in their homemade studio, they have created a delightfully straight forward helping of indie pop. It is a song which wears its influences proudly, as 80s synths merge with Strokesy guitar lines.
Likewise, Carl Vikberg’s vocal channels New York’s finest, sounding like Julian Casablancas at his nonchalant best. Additionally hints of both The Drums and The Vaccines can be heard in Ambitions as it swaggers from verse to verse. It comes as no surprise to hear the band say that they are also inspired by the songcraft of ABBA, another Scandinavian quartet with a way with melody.
Lyrically, Ambitions deals with coming-of-age moments both grand and specific. Vikberg’s delivery adds the necessary cool to lines such as “Before my eyes the world unfolds/ but I don’t know if I have lost or gained control” and “When I wasn’t with you I was often down/ but it was forgotten when I came around”.
This is vintage indie music which marks Chirping out as a band to be reckoned with. Immediately memorable and full of melody it’s proof that those Swedes have still got it.
Verdict: An infectious indie classic
