Riley Roth: will delight fans of the likes of Kelsea Ballerini and Cassadee Pope

We’re delighting in new music by Riley Roth, Idlewild, Jonas Brothers, The Strange, Film Jacket 35 and Second Hand Poet

RILEY ROTH
FRIENDLY
Altadena

Kicking off with a lush guitar opening this infectious track builds into a quick-fire country/pop crossover anthem all about friends becoming lovers. Roth’s vocals are both powerful and softly lilting, highlighting the control the songstress possesses over her voice. This is a feel-good hit that will delight fans of the likes of Kelsea Ballerini and Cassadee Pope. LK

IDLEWILD
DREAM VARIATIONS
Empty Words

It’s always nice when an old favourite returns with new material, even more so when said material catches you by surprise with its quality. Such is the case with this offering from Scottish indie legends Idlewild. Empty Words starts off in sturdy fashion before losing itself in a carnival of sound; it makes for a captivating listen. DH

JONAS BROTHERS
SUCKER
Jonas Brothers Recording

Pop-rock trio Jonas Brothers make their triumphant return with their first single in six years. The new taste of music sees Nick Jonas taking the lead with his divine falsetto tone with the added lush vocals of Joe Jonas and backing from Kevin Jonas. Overall, it’s a pop-heavy track about being in love with someone and not being able to get them out of your head. It’s a fantastic return from the band. LK

THE STRANGE
FAST TRAIN TO NOWHERE
Glitterhouse Records

The Strange, a collaboration between American singer-songwriter Chris Eckman and Croatian instrumental surf-rockers The Bambi Molesters, blend the gothic lyrical vision of the former with the imaginative arrangements of the latter. On this track, taken from new album Echo Chamber, they embrace uncertainty and get lost in the landscape of central Europe on a train that will, “Never take us home”. DH

FILM JACKET 35
SOMETHING YOU SHOULD DO
Self-release

Punchy, life-affirming and instantly memorable, this trio from Athens, Greece clearly know their indie rock. Throw in a pummelling drumbeat, some frantic guitars and backing “oohs” and all the classic elements are here. All that’s left is to sit back and enjoy the ride. DH

SECOND HAND POET
I’LL BE YOURS
Pretty Thing Records

Sounds of the countryside introduce the latest single from Surrey-based singer-songwriter Jamie Tipson (AKA Second Hand Poet) and lead seamlessly into this tender love song. Reminiscent of Andrew Bird, it’s an ode to that one (or thing) who shows you the light and breaks your falls. DH

Words: Laura Klonowski, Duncan Haskell
