Today, Songwriting is delighted to bring you a first listen to ‘Alice’, from James McCartney’s forthcoming album ‘The Blackberry Train’

The Blackberry Train_Packshot2ndDec_3Our third track exclusive of the week comes from James McCartney, a London-based songwriter who, although he tends to play it down, has rather famous parents. Alice is taken from his third album The Blackberry Train, which will be out on 6 May.

For this album, McCartney enlisted the production talents of the legendary Steve Albini – and it shows! If you’re expecting easily hummable pop ditties from McCartney, then for this album you’ll need to think again. There’s a fine musical sensibility for sure, but to our ears Alice sits somewhere between the angular, leftfield pop of Ben Folds Five and the angst-ridden indie-rock of Radiohead, with a little Jane’s Addiction-ish dirt thrown in for good measure.

McCartney says of the song: “I guess Alice is kind of referencing Alice In Wonderland. It’s just a fun song and a bit trippy, in a way. I was at home in St John’s Wood when I wrote it.”
