The sounds of southern cotton fields and Chicago speakeasies come to East Yorkshire – and you can experience them for free!
Taking place on 1-3 July in the Great Hall and stunning grounds of Burton Agnes Hall, an Elizabethan stately home in Driffield, East Yorkshire, Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival has, in its 10 years in existence, cemented its reputation as one of the UK’s leading jazz and blues festivals. And this year, you can sample the festival’s delights for yourself, because we have a family pass for the whole weekend to give away to one lucky Songwriting reader!
Topping the bill this year is PP Arnold, the former Ikette who rose to fame in the 60s with a string of classic singles on Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate label, including Angel Of The Morning and The First Cut Is The Deepest. One of the ultimate Mod icons, Ms Arnold has gone on to work, in the intervening half decade, with everyone from The Rolling Stones, The Small Faces, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to Ocean Colour Scene, Primal Scream and The Manfreds.
Other highlights of the 2016 line-up are legendary British jazz vocalist Elaine Delmar, who’ll be performing a selection of Cole Porter and George & Ira Gershwin classics, and the acclaimed Blind Monk Trio. Also set to appear are Mad Dog Jones & The Sophisticats, Latin jazz outfit Bugulu Foundation, world fusionists Manjula, calypso-jazzers Pan Jumby, gypsy-jazz violinist Matt Holborn, vocalist Lindsay Hannon, improvisers extraordinaire The Graeme Wilson Quartet and jazz n’ blues party-starters Ben Beattie’s After Midnight Band, who’ll be joined by saxophonist Simon Cunliffe-Lister.
