Listening to Victoria Canal talk about her songwriting, it’s impossible not to feel inspired. “I’m doing something I love and I want to inspire others to do what they love, too.”

Born without her right forearm due to amniotic band syndrome, she has refused to let her supposed disability get in the way. “It’s part of my story,” says Victoria, “and I have the opportunity to encourage other people to ruthlessly run after their dreams, regardless of what limitations society may have put on them.”

Her Into The Pull EP belies her age and presents a mature artist who’s poured her experiences into her songs. “My music delves into wonder and nostalgia,” she says. “With regards to my sound, if it were on a Spotify playlist, it’d be right in-between artists like Sam Smith, Emeli Sandé and Jessie Ware. Melodically enticing but lyrically notable.”

Her writing style is a blend of experimentation and comfort. Rather than write on the piano she’s been playing for years, she looks for inspiration in less familiar tools, using a ukulele, bass guitar and loop station to provoke her imagination.

Towards the end of the video for City Shoes, Victoria starts dancing. “If you know me personally, you know I’m not a dancer,” she says. But that’s Victoria: she’s prepared to embrace any experience, and that, along with a voice like crystal, is what makes her such a compelling artist.
