Italian trio Goldsmack have released an assured debut EP which harks back to rock’s dirty greats, whilst still leaping forwards
ild Season is the debut EP from Italian trio Goldsmack. Georgia Minelli, Luca Bagatti and Davide Tebaldi are childhood friends who formed a band in their small village, with the age-old mission of getting the hell out of Dodge. Over the course of five tracks they make a compelling argument to suggest that this mission just might succeed.
Kicking off with Good Morning Star, you are faced with a sludgy collection of rock numbers harking back to the early days of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, with an added electronic twist. The standout track is A Wild Wild Season. With Davide Tebaldi taking lead vocal, it is impossible to ignore how similar he sounds to Nick Cave. The sparse instrumentation combines with his detached vocal and creates an ice-cold moment of Italian cool.
Ramping things up, Kids With Guns brings the jackhammer riffs and crashing percussion. Rites Of Spring is a slice of dirty blues, pulsating around Tebaldi’s swirling guitars – Minelli again takes the lead and has all the swagger of Alison Mosshart at her most rocking. An otherworldly sheen washes over Of Human Bondage creating a shamanic fadeout to close the EP with.
Wild Season is an assured debut. Fedoras may well be doffed to rock’s greats, but there is also originality here. It might be a while before Goldsmack return home.
Verdict: Classic blues rock with moments of innovation
