Balthazar make their move to step into the musical limelight, with a record that bears hints of the Black Keys
elgian five-piece Balthazar have been working together in various guises for nearly a decade but now finally look set to make waves on UK shores, as they introduce themselves with the filmic tale The Oldest Of Sisters. The song’s two-and-a-half minutes start off with bobbing bass, off-beats and a drawled, cut vocal. The track then really hits its stride as it unveils film-score brass and harmonies that sound like they were recorded in a tavern cellar. This is a track that could comfortably slot into place on The Last Shadow Puppets’ Age Of The Understatement LP and even hints at a Black Keys acoustic moment, with added John Barry sax.
With Balthazar’s Rats LP out next year, this makes for an enticing first taste.
Verdict: A taster single that leaves you salivating for their upcoming LP
