This week’s Thursday exclusive comes in video form, and is a laidback slice of neo-soul from Stockholm singer-songwriter Amana Melome
orn in Germany, educated in Italy and the USA and currently living in Sweden, Amana Melome is an international artist in the true sense of the word, writing and singing in Italian, French, German and English. She’s also an artist with an impressive heritage: her grandfather played in the Duke Ellington orchestra and with the likes of Miles Davis, Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald, while both her grandmother and her aunt were also jazz singers.
Amana’s own musical career began with the album Indigo Red, released in 2008. That was followed by Phoenix Rising in 2011 and the five-track Lock And Key EP earlier this year. Today, Songwriting exclusively presents the brand new animated video for Save My Soul Tonight, taken from the latter EP. The video is the work of animation company dreambear – specifically, animator/illustrator Daniel Cordero and producers Evan Brown and Lee Levin – and we’ll let Amana tell you about it in her own words…
“Save My Soul Tonight is about a bond between two souls which outlasts time and space. The word ‘love’ is not word enough to describe it. I believe soul mates find each other eventually, and repeatedly, and I recognise myself as such in the eyes and heart of my now husband. Work has us constantly travelling, and often we are physically separate for months at a time. Save My Soul Tonight is my journey back to my love’s arms.
“It’s a dreamy song and I felt it would be wonderful to have it animated. I’d seen a video that dreambear had done for Talib Kweli and was feeling their style, so I did some research and decided to go out on a limb and contact them. Serendipity made it all come together! We worked together from beginning to end, back and forth with ideas… visual to storyboard.”
We reckon fans of Jill Scott, Macy Gray or Emeli Sandé will fall for this one but, as always, you can make your own minds up…
