This week’s exclusive once again comes in video form, as Songwriting presents a world-first airing of this melancholy pop gem
nother video exclusive for you this Thursday, this one coming from NYC-based twin sister duo Nalani & Sarina. Classically trained on piano from the age of five and raised on a diet of folk, Dylan, Cohen and Beatles, Nalani & Sarina began gigging across the northeastern US three years ago and released their debut album Lessons Learned in January 2014. They cite their biggest influences as Tom Petty, Carole King, Taylor Swift and Sam & Dave.
As for new single Runaway, taken from their Scattered World EP and presented here in ‘unplugged’ form, we’d describe it as “pop with a social conscience” – Suzanne Vega’s Luka, Bruce Hornsby’s The Way It Is, Prince’s Sign O’ The Times or Lorde’s Royals are reference points that spring to mind lyrically, if not musically. The girls themselves say of the song, “We created a fictional character based on and inspired by people we know who aren’t fortunate enough to have a normal, sufficient home life. In our eyes, this happens far too often and it’s a story that needs to be told.”

PS: Nalani & Sarina also do a fine choral/ukelele cover of The Ramones’ I Wanna Be Sedated, which is pretty much a reason to love them in itself…
