The excellent Deltron 3030 offer a tantalising glimpse of things to come with their ‘City Rising From The Ashes’ EP

Deltron 3030-Coverhose of you with only a passing interest in hip-hop may find your ears pricked up by the songs on Deltron 3030’s City Rising From The Ashes EP, noting a familiar voice. That voice, dear readers, is none other than Teren Delvon Jones, AKA Del the Funky Homosapien – cousin of seminal west coast rapper Ice Cube and Clint Eastwood-featured Gorillaz collaborator.

Starting with the brilliant Pay The Price and featuring the similarly excellent The Agony and Rising From The Ashes, Deltron 3030 mixes the socially conscious and profound lyrics that have made Del a legend of his scene with beats and rhythms catchy enough to snare even the most casual of hip-hop fans, let alone those with a taste for producer Dan ‘The Automator’ Nakamura’s work with the sublime Dr Octagon and Handsome Boy Modeling School.

Though it does have the inevitable feel of a prelude, with album Deltron 3030: Event II due out at the end of this month, the only criticism that can be levied against City Rising From The Ashes is that you’ll have to wait a whole three weeks before you are able to access the upcoming album. Though the hip-hop legend offers fans but three tracks on the EP none will disappoint fans, offering a tantalising taste of things to come.

Verdict: A treat for casual and devoted hip-hop fans alike
