Sophia Scott: “Being in rooms with people that are better than me is the most valuable aspect of songwriting in Nashville.”

The Nashville-based artist discusses life in Music City, her favourite songwriters, and the story behind writing her latest single ‘Tumbleweed’

Sophia Scott is a Colorado-born and Nashville-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Despite being relatively new to the industry, she has already solidified her reputation as one of Music City’s most promising songwriters. She is known for her raw lyrical writing that blends Southern rock, pop, R&B, and soul and some might even recognise her as a previous opener for the Jonas Brothers.

Back in 2023, in true Nashville fashion, Scott made her Grand Ole Opry debut the same day as the release of her debut album Barstool Confessions. Jumping forward, she is now preparing for her upcoming appearances at C2C: Country to Country in Rotterdam and Berlin. We caught up with a busy Scott to discuss her journey as a songwriter, how Nashville has impacted her journey, and the story behind writing Tumbleweed

When did you start writing songs and do you remember the first song you wrote?

“When I was super young…I had a band in fourth grade called the Candy Girls and the first song we wrote was called Cool Coffee Shop.”

Growing up, who was your biggest songwriting inspiration?

“I have always admired Don Henley’s songwriting. It’s poetry, but so understood.”

You recently released Tumbleweed which you co-wrote with two Nashville songwriters. Can you describe that songwriting process and how the song came about?

“I wrote Tumbleweed with some of my favourite writers, Ava Suppelsa and Ross Copperman. It’s semi-autobiographical, but Ava came in with the title, having my Colorado roots in mind. It tells the story of a relationship where an untamed spirit begins to soften and change in the presence of someone who offers them unconditional love and understanding.

“It’s a tribute to the idea that love is not about changing someone into something they’re not, but rather, it’s about helping them realise who they can truly be when they feel accepted and understood. It’s a declaration that even the most misunderstood, complicated people (speaking from my own experience) deserve a chance at happiness and transformation.”

Sophia Scott: “Being in rooms with people that are better than me is the most valuable aspect of songwriting in Nashville.”

How do you think living in Nashville has influenced your writing?

“It’s expanded my horizons on so many levels. Being in rooms with people that are better than me is the most valuable aspect of songwriting in Nashville. Getting to work with classic country writers who really know how to write incredible lyrics is the greatest learning tool.”

Do you have a favourite songwriter that you credit for helping you grow?

“I’m going to shout out my friend Ava Suppelsa, because not only is she one of my best friends but she is a genius lyricist and always stumbles upon ear-candy melodies. I think it’s special because she knows me so well and can really help me articulate my story, or whatever drama I’m going through that day.”

If you could co-write with any new songwriter today, who would it be and why?

“I would love to write with Hillary Lindsey. She’s the GOAT.”

What would be your biggest piece of advice for an aspiring songwriter who would like to be in a writing room with you one day?

“Recognise that if you can imagine it – you can create it. Just get out and do it! There’s no better way to make it happen than to just start doing it and practice every day. Hard work will never let you down.”
