Sam Brockington: as seasonal as a balmy glass of mulled wine
Fans of both indie and folk will find much to enjoy in this three minute track that’s brimming with warmth
Sam Brockington has been likened to Matt Corby, Nick Mulvey and George Ezra. It’s little surprise then to find that his single, Follow, takes a musical path that unites finger-picking folk and delicately harmonised indie.
Opening in the playful vein of Badly Drawn Boy, the track strolls through its first verse and chorus before a floating backing vocal joins the fray and follows the velvety indie melodies into a more considered middle eight. It’s at this moment that the song really shines, as that backing vocal becomes a chorus and Brockington is given licence to let his prodigious voice take centre stage, closing in a gorgeous clatter.
With intricate melodies and a voice full of warmth, songwriter Sam Brockington is as seasonal as a balmy glass of mulled wine. Follow can, then, be taken as an early present from the youthful writer and one that can be unwrapped throughout the festive season.
Verdict: Indie for the folks who love gorgeous voices
