Slow Riot: have channelled their disdain into a discordant anthem

Rather than celebrating their home city’s status, Irish trio Slow Riot have instead come up with a deliciously withering putdown

Slow Riot 'City Of Culture' single coverhe new single from post-punk trio, Slow Riot, was inspired by their home town Limerick, Ireland’s City of Culture in 2014. Instead of honouring this accolade, the band rail against it on this brooding and frenzied night crawl of a track.

Equal parts antipathy and menace, City Of Culture crashes along with the musical might of McLusky’s To Hell With Good Intentions before closing with the eerie refrain “You had the evening to enjoy / My regret was instant”, immediately bringing to mind another witching hour classic, The Rat by The Walkmen.

Like many bands before them, Slow Riot have channelled their disdain into a discordant anthem and by cranking up the energy they have written a call to arms fist-raiser.

Verdict: A savage guitar-driven assault
