Ed Sheeran is the Ivor Novello Songwriter Of The Year

Ed Sheeran, Manic Street Preachers and Black Sabbath are included among the winners at this year’s Ivor Novello Award ceremony

esterday (21 May) saw the 60th Ivor Novello Award ceremony and among this year’s award winners were Songwriting darling Ed Sheeran, legendary Welsh rockers Manic Street Preachers and metal godfathers Black Sabbath.

Sheeran was named the Songwriter Of The Year, with the award handed to him by Elton John. John paid homage to Sheeran’s impressive talent by predicting that he would last the distance in the music industry, advising, “he will have a career as long as mine if he wants; hopefully he won’t get in as much trouble and marry a man and a woman.”

Manic Street Preachers received the noted Ivors Inspiration Award, which was presented to them by Kasabian’s Tom Meighan and Sergio Pizzorno. Upon receiving the award, the band’s bassist Nicky Wire gave thanks to the influence that Dylan Thomas, ABBA, Karl Marx have had upon them, while thanking Richey Edwards for his “beautiful and brilliant mind.”

A further tribute was paid to legends of the songwriting world, as Black Sabbath were given the Lifetime Achievement Award. Collecting the award without their frontman Ozzy Osbourne, the band’s drummer Bill Ward said that their career had been “a fantastic journey so far and [that he hoped] it will continue to be too.”

Elsewhere there were notable awards for Bombay Bicycle Club, who claimed best album for So Long, See You Tomorrow, Annie Lennox, who was honoured with BASCA Fellowship, and Clean Bandit who won the PRS For Music Most Performed Work for their song Rather Be.
