Hans Zimmer to teach film scoring

Hans Zimmer: the German composer and record producer has scored the soundtracks for over 150 films

The Academy Award-winning composer and producer will reveal the secrets to storytelling through music in his first ever online class

San Francisco-based education platform, MasterClass has announced that Hans Zimmer, the acclaimed film composer, will be teaching film scoring. A self-proclaimed academic failure with no formal music training and a short career in rock ‘n’ roll, Zimmer is a four-time Grammy Award winner and has scored the soundtracks for over 150 films including The Lion King, Gladiator, Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Dark Knight, Inception and Interstellar.

In his first ever online class, Zimmer will teach aspiring songwriters and composers how to use music to tell a story. The masterclass will delve into the inner workings of musical composition covering topics such as how to create new sound palates, establish a tempo, score to dialogue and picture, and use sound to tell a story. Through Zimmer’s personal instruction, students will study examples of his work including breaking down the sounds that helped create memorable characters such as The Joker from Batman and Sherlock Holmes.

“Music is my language, my form of communicating,” says Hans Zimmer. “My masterclass is a way for me to show that bold ideas can come from anyone and all you need is a computer to make music. Maybe even just a phone! I hope my masterclass helps people see they just need to break the rules and move their ideas forward. The rest is just technicalities.”

MasterClass’ current roster of instructors includes Christina Aguilera, Usher, Reba McEntire and deadmau5, with each class available online for individual purchase at $90 (approx. £72) each. Through the platform, instructors create online classes with interactive assignments, course materials, student community and Q&A.
