On The Stereo: June 2021
Listen to some superb new tracks from MBG, Ashley Kutcher, Slow Pulp, Lunar Vacation, Anna Leone, Tamera and more
FOOLISH BY PINK ELEFANTS
Foolish by Pink Elefants is a laidback and funky ode to authenticity. Like Nelly in ultra-relaxed mode, hip hop beats and soulful synths provide a backdrop over which Maryland duo Finch and Illeven can weave their magic.
IMPERSONATOR BY KATY FOR KINGS
In just under three minutes, Impersonator by Katy For Kings makes a compelling case for the need to be comfortable with who you are before you can be happy in any other relationship. Melodic pop with an empowering message, it’s a winning formula!
PLUG ME IN BY JAMES AND THE COLD GUN
Like an adrenaline shot for the soul, James And The Cold Gun’s Plug Me In certainly hits the spot. Classic rock spawned from the band’s garage, this is one to turn up high and shake out all of your anxieties to.
WILDFLOWERS BY I, THE MOUNTAIN
Like walking through a summer meadow in full bloom, Wildflowers by I, The Mountain blankets you in its comforting embrace. Packed with both melody and harmony, this pop-folk number manages to be both delicate and euphoric.
A PERFECT DAY BY ANNA AARONS
With her beguiling ukulele playing firmly at its centre, A Perfect Day sees London-based Anna Aarons bringing together elements of reggae, folk and pop in the name of positivity. Very much a summer song, let this one float from your speakers and drift out of your open windows.
SHRUG BY LUNAR VACATION
Shrug by Lunar Vacation is swirling and shimmering indie-pop of the very best kind. Guitars wind around the energetic rhythm section, melodies linger and Grace Repasky’s vocals welcome life outside of binary constraints.
YOUR TABLE BY JINNWOO
It’s with genuine delight that we greet the return of Jinnwoo. New single Your Table instantly reaffirms his position at the top table of modern folk music and viscerally portrays the yearning which accompanies unrequited love.
GO O.U.T. BY MBG
Bristling with frustration and anger, Go O.U.T. is the incendiary new single from punky alt-rocker MBG. Having been, ‘Cooped up, locked down in a bungalow,’ the Canadian multi-instrumentalist breaks free on her heaviest song to date.
WICKEDEST BY TAMERA
Adorned with sultry guitar licks and rhythmic percussion, Wickedest is the latest single to showcase Tamera’s talent. A musical magpie in the very best sense, her many influences are collected together on this hypnotizing pop number.
V.O. BY PIROSHKA
V.O. is Piroshka’s tribute to Vaughan Oliver, the 4AD in-house art director who died in 2019. With lyrics directly inspired by his funeral, including snippets taken from speeches, there’s both poignancy and paean running through the song.
REMEMBER BY ANNA LEONE
There’s a timeless feel to Anna Leone’s Remember as if it has always belonged in the pantheon of indie-folk. Its stark nature adds to the feeling of purity; the song is at the heart of things and there’s no place (or need) to hide.
EASY FOR ME BY SOFT FOCUS
Infused with the sound and spirit of 70s pop-rock, Easy For Me is the debut single from Soft Focus (the moniker of multi-instrumentalist Bianca Eddleston). Also sharing production duties with Bill Ryder Jones, this Yorkshire-based artist is clearly one to watch.
FAVOURITE WHAT IF BY ASHLEY KUTCHER
Favourite What If is the latest single from rising Baltimore artist Ashley Kutcher. A dreamy and sepia-tinted pop song which captures the nostalgic feeling of a once-close relationship fallen by the wayside, it’s a subtly powerful listen.
IOWA BY SLOW PULP
Hazy acoustics and an entrancing beat make ideal bedfellows on Iowa, the new song from Chicago-based band Slow Pulp. Like the best watercolour painting, there’s a lightness of touch that helps you get lost in its gentle palette.
