America

America has been on our mind this week. Image by Gordon Johnson

Today’s weekly round-up is brushed with an American tinge, as we cover a landmark moment and feature an alt-country classic

He said it, folks: “together we’re going to deliver real change that once again puts Americans first. That begins with immediately repealing and replacing the disaster known as Obamacare… You’re going to have such great health care, at a tiny fraction of the cost—and it’s going to be so easy.” Well, Donald, it’s been not immediate, repealed, or replaced: just how easy was that?

We can’t claim to be experts on Obamacare, but it seems to us that The Donald’s failure to convince his party to support one of his primary policy objectives is hardly a ringing endorsement for the support of his Presidency. What does this mean for the free world’s most infamous leader? We’re not sure, but it certainly appears to be a landmark moment for his administration.

Now, though, we continue this week’s American theme with a truly sublime classic.

Classic Of The Week

‘Our Hearts Are Wrong’ by Jessica Lea Mayfield (2011)

For those of you familiar with the work of the brilliant alt-country songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield, today’s classic will be instantly recognisable. For those of you who aren’t, well, you’re in for a real treat. Writing with the brutal honesty she’s made her trademark, Mayfield is eloquent, acerbic and effortlessly precise. If alt-country is your bag we suggest buying a bigger rucksack, so that you can fit this gem inside.
