The War On Drugs

The War On Drugs have topped 6 Music’s albums of 2014 list

Philadelphia indie-rockers take the No 1 slot on a list of 2014 albums selected by BBC digital radio station presenters

he War On Drugs have made the best album of 2014. Or at least, they have according to the presenters and producers over at BBC 6 Music, the BBC’s digital-only radio station that focuses mostly on new music, who have chosen Lost In The Dream above long-players by St Vincent, Kate Tempest and, well, basically everyone in the world apart from The War On Drugs. There can be only one…

Mark Radcliffe called Lost In The Dream “a ‘proper’ album where one track just effortlessly drifts into the next. It’s an introvert’s take on classic rock, with echoes of Dylan and Springsteen but all wrapped in a blissful, slacker’s haze. Over the summer it accompanied me on more or less every journey I took. And what a summer it was.”

Presenters on the station include an eclectic mix of former Radio 1 DJs such as Mary Anne Hobbs, Liz Kershaw and Mark Radcliffe, veteran club DJs like Gilles Peterson and Don Letts, and pop star spinners including Jarvis Cocker, Huey Morgan, Guy Garvey and Tom Robinson. Their full list of ‘albums of 2014’ is as follows:

1. The War On Drugs – Lost In The Dream
2. St Vincent – St Vincent
3. First Aid Kit – Stay Gold
4. Kate Tempest – Everybody Down
5. Sharon Van Etten – Are We There
6. Caribou – Our Love
7. Royal Blood – Royal Blood
8. Jack White – Lazaretto
9. Elbow – The Take Off And Landing Of Everything
10. Beck – Morning Phase
11. Future Islands – Singles
12. Tune-Yards – Nikki Nack
13. Liars – Mess
14. Todd Terje – It’s Album Time
15. Alt J – This Is All Yours

We will, of course, be bringing our Songwriting‘s own ‘best of 2014’ round-up before the year’s out, so you can find out then if we agree with the 6 Music team’s choices!
