Syd Barrett, one of rock music’s true legends

Fans of the mercurial Pink Floyd founder will be delighted by a new official website that commemorates his exceptional talent

He’s one of rock music’s true greats, a musician who formed one of the most influential bands ever and whose songwriting has been the inspiration for legions of musicians. Today (6 January) would have been his 70th birthday and fans of Syd Barrett have been given a present of their own, with the release of a new official website.

The website sydbarrett.com has been made by Barrett’s friends and family and as such has a unique licence to release material by the legendary songwriter. Fans will be able to find exclusive material, photographs and information, with featured songs treated to detailed analysis alongside reviews, essays and images from a range of celebrity guest writers.

Speaking of the launch of the site, Barrett’s nephew Ian Barrett said: “2016 promises to be an exciting year for Syd Barrett’s fans and we hope that in keeping with my uncle’s talents, this online resource will act as a springboard, inspiring a new generation of artists – both musical and visual.”

That’s not all though. Cambridge Live has announced plans to commemorate Barrett’s life with a piece of public art that will be displayed at the Cambridge Corn Exchange, where the legendary songwriter played his last ever live performances. The piece could be either a sculpture, painting or installation and will be on display to the Cambridge Corn Exchange’s 200,000 yearly visitors.

Barrett’s sister Rosemary Breen said of the announcement: “We welcome this opportunity to commemorate Roger (Syd). He was bright, funny, quirky and witty and was an artist not just in terms of ‘music’ or ‘paintings’ but in a much wider sense. We look forward to working with Cambridge Live to create a lasting memory of an inspiring man.”
