Stormzy releases emotional debut album
The UK grime artist’s eagerly-awaited debut album finally sees the light of day, receiving support from peers and critics alike
Today sees the release of grime artist Stormzy’s debut album. Great secrecy has surround the album, titled Gang Signs & Prayer. His mum is yet to hear the finished product, even though she appears on track 100 Bags.
The album also features artists Ghetts, Raleigh Ritchie, MNEK and Kehlani. The release has seen a wave of support from artists, with Adele tweeting: “This fine young man’s album is out today. Good luck darling.”
Even Jake Wood, who plays Max Branning in EastEnders, gave the godfather of grime his approval.
Stormzy thanked his collaborators in a tweet: “Thank you to Ghetts, J Hus, Jenny Francis, Lily Allen, Kehlani, Wretch 32, MNEK, Mum, Raleigh Ritchie, Crazy Titch, Nao, Kwab.”
The release is being heralded as a defining moment in grime, a genre that is often overlooked at major award ceremonies like the Brits. Stormzy’s surprise duet with Ed Sheeran at this year’s Brit Awards was a major talking point.
