Our new edition features Black Francis, Jamie Cullum, Gabriella Cilmi, Guy Chambers, Grant Nicholas, Jenna Andrews, Gretchen Peters and more

Songwriting is proud to announce the publication of the Summer 2019 edition with Pixies’ Black Francis on the cover. Ahead of the legendary alt-rock band’s new album Beneath The Eyrie being released, we got to delve a little deeper into the world of the iconic frontman, and the music which inspired the likes of Kurt Cobain, PJ Harvey, Billy Corgan and even David Bowie. This brand new issue of our digital magazine, aimed at songwriters and fans of song-led music, provides readers with 100 pages of interview features with big-name artists and rising stars, songwriting tips and techniques, along with the latest news and reviews of new music and gear.

As well as getting to know Frank Black, we chat with multi-award-winning songwriter, jazz musician and broadcaster Jamie Cullum, meet Australian pop star Gabriella Cilmi, catch up with Robbie Williams’ creative partner Guy Chambers, speak to Feeder frontman Grant Nicholas, and spend five minutes with Canadian co-writer, producer and publishing company head Jenna Andrews. Then we get Irish musician Wallis Bird to deconstruct her powerful new protest song, and via the Sodajerker podcast Trevor Horn lifts the lid on 10 of his classic tracks.

Other features include How I Wrote Teenage Kicks by The Undertones’ John O’Neill, How I Wrote Right To Be Wrong by Joss Stone and How I Wrote Rhythm & Blues Alibi by Gomez’s Ben Ottewell. Plus The Futureheads’ Barry Hyde shows us his #SongwritingSurvivalKit, Honeyblood shares her Diary Of A Songwriter, and we discover the scene, players, albums and kit that surround the genre of Outlaw Country. We also introduce new acts Merival, Black Pumas and Kitt Philippa, and some of our past interviewees reveal The Album That Changed Everything for them.

In our Technique section, Gretchen Peters explains how to write from your subconscious, Richard Digance talks about the skills needed to write comedy songs, Anoushka Lucas shares 10 things she learnt from musical theatre, James Linderman advises what to do if you only write lyrics, and Brett Leboff helps you to channel your fear and take the stress out of songwriting.
